Every Summer since I turned 15, I have spent a week or two at the lake house of a close friend in the town of Northville, NY on the shore of Great Sacandaga Lake. It's my favorite place in the world. My mind tablets are etched with some of my best memories with some of my oldest friends. I had been working with the idea of a concept album about Great Lake Sacandaga since last year, and I was finally struck with just the right creative energy over Winter break of 2012-2013. The result is this:
Great Lake, referring to Lake Sacandaga itself, triggers memories of tripping on the lake, basking in the glory of life and the beauty and balance of all living things.
Skiff Road, the long, dusty road connecting the lake house to the rest of the small lake community. This track is more of a single groove than a "song", representative of the short walk or drive between the lake and the town.
and Northville, the town itself, in all of its understated glory. The Red Barn consignment shop, full of the treasures from countless individuals from countless backgrounds and countless time-frames. The Grand Union grocery store, where I bought my first beer when I was only 18. And particularly, the long drive from my hometown in Pennsylvania to Northville -- butterflies in my stomach the entire way.
I did my absolute best to take all the connotation and nuance and raw emotion of this place, and translate it into sound. And though I know now that this goal is unattainable, the result is still something special to me, as every time I listen, every time I reflect, these songs work their way into that idilic form that my mind conceives whenever I hear the word, "Sacandaga".
Enjoy Sacandaga EP.
